lost to the Cleveland Browns B.J. Hill Jersey , 20-10, in their preseason opener, head coach Pat Shurmur assessed the game by telling reporters that he told players “that if each guy cleans up one mistake, then we end up being on the winning end of a game like that.”Here are some of the takeaways from Shurmur’s day-after-game conference call.On the play of rookie quarterback Kyle Lauletta ...“He’s very calm, and I think he finds a way to make plays. He had a nice deep ball down the sideline to Amba [Etta-Tawo] that ended up being a [pass interference]. ... I [think] he’s got a calm presence about him. I think he lost control of the clock once, we got the ball snapped, but those are all things you learn when you’re playing. So, it wasn’t a bad performance to start out for him.”On whether the Giants got any clarity at free safety ..“Curtis [Riley] wasn’t out there and then [Darian Thompson] hurt himself on one of the special teams and was out of the game with a hamstring. Probably no. In terms of the clarity, no. There were guys that were out there performing well, but in terms of saying this is the guy, I would say no.”On the sideline operation for a new coaching staff ...“I thought it was much smoother than I had anticipated. Typically, for a staff that’s worked together for years, you would have a communication breakdown or two that you need to work through, but I thought we were able to communicate pretty effectively. We already debriefed it. There are a couple things that we’ll keep private that we’ll do a little bit differently, but for the most part I thought the exchange of information was good. We really didn’t have substitution errors. That usually shows up in preseason games, to speak of. Again, we need to keep building on that. You have to constantly work at communicating, and certainly being able to do that on the sideline can help the players play better.”On the play of Davis Webb ...“He is so prepared and he wants to do well, that’s just his personality Authentic Saquon Barkley Jersey , and he does get amped up a little bit but that’s not a bad thing. Wanting to do well is a good thing. I think we as coaches can just help him with that.”On the clock mismanagement at the end of the first half ...“There’s nothing other than the fact that we have to get out of bounds on that play. We called a route to get out of bounds and the throw was thrown inside, and it makes it almost impossible for the receiver to continue out of bounds. We knew we had to use the sideline because we didn’t have any timeouts. We had that communicated effectively, it just didn’t get done.”On upcoming joint practices with the Detroit Lions ...“My experience against practicing against one another is both teams need to be smart. Both teams need to understand the tempo of every drill. We’re out there competing, but this certainly isn’t the first time teams have practiced against one another. When Matt [Patricia] was the defensive coordinator at New England, I did it twice when I was with Philadelphia. I’ve worked with Matt before. We’ve got a good feel of the tempo and how we want to do it. We kind of set the ground rules ahead of time, and try to get good work.”Odell Beckham contract: Both sides worked to make historic deal happen Odell Beckham Jr. has been setting records since he entered the NFL in 2014. Now, he has a record-setting contract to go along with it. Beckham and the New York Giants have finalized a long-awaited mega-contract.There was a time back in the offseason when it looked like this deal, which both sides have seemingly wanted for a while now, might not happen. Back in March, there were reports that the Giants — perhaps tired of the drama and distractions that have surrounded Beckham since he was the team’s first-round pick in 2014 — were open to the idea of trading the superstar wide receiver rather than paying him. Whether there were any teeth to those rumors or not, the idea made sense. The Giants had a new regime, they were 3-13 a year ago, Beckham was on the cusp of the mega-deal he now has, and both because of the constant swirl of non-football headlines he had always created and the serious injury he was coming off there were questions about whether the two sides would go forward with a long-term marriage.Well, thanks to work done by both sides they have now done so.New GM Dave Gettleman and new coach Pat Shurmur gave everyone, including Beckham, a clean slate. Reports are that as far back as February, Shurmur began reaching out to Beckham and building a relationship with him. For his part, Beckham did everything he could to show the Giants that he wanted to be with the team. He never complained to the media about his contract or threatened a holdout. He showed up to OTAs http://www.newyorkgiantsteamonline.com/saquon-barkley-jersey , mandatory mini-camp and training camp despite not having a new deal. He worked tirelessly and showed the Giants not only that he wanted to be there, but that the injury had not robbed him of any of the explosiveness that made him the great player he was before injury. Beckham once said the dream was to be the highest-paid player in the game. He won’t be that, but he will easily be the highest-paid wide receiver in the game’s history. Giants co-owner John Mara has been saying for a couple of years now that he wanted Beckham to be a Giant, if not for his entire career, for a long time. So, both sides get something they wanted.Ian Rapoport is reporting that Beckham will get $41 million fully guaranteed and a total of $65 million guaranteed over the life of his five-year extension. He won’t quite average $20 million annually over the life of the deal, which no player other than a quarterback ever has. The way the deal is apparently structured, though, Rapoport said that Beckham will average $20 million annually over its last three seasons.Beckham’s teammates were happy enough to throw a locker room party for him when the news broke. It’s a historic deal that puts Beckham in the league’s top five in guaranteed money. He becomes the highest-paid receiver in terms of annual value, topping Antonio Brown of the Pittsburgh Steelers ($17 million), and in guaranteed money, topping Mike Evans of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers ($55 million). So, an expensive but very good day for the Giants. One that guarantees that, if healthy, the Giants will be able to pair Beckham and Saquon Barkley for several years to come. It makes Beckham, the Giants, his teammates and the fan base happy.A win all the way around.
